Circle
Building on memories of watching westerns on a small black and white TV, Circle engages the mythology of the western cowboy and language of film. Shot from one fixed camera angle, positioned on an arena fence during a Charreada (Mexican rodeo) and a touring Texas Rodeo Company, the video contrasts the Charreada’s fury of movement with the rodeos tight control. Circle’s viewing format (stretched long and short by today’s standards) recalls the once popular western film form of cinemascope. This format makes it difficult to view the whole as one. As center and edges change, the work calls into question, what is lost…. what is gained… when this release occurs.
