SWIMMER 1997 - 1999
Swimmer photographs are about movement, water, light and air, and not so much about athleticism. Even though the project title “Swimmer” is singular, I doubled the images as the work seemed to be about both the body of the swimmer in the photo and mine, inside and outside the water. The photographs were made from recollections after visiting a small college in central Minnesota I attended for a short time after high school. Invited to create a work for the school gallery; I was reminded of a swimming pool, built in the 20’s, where I tried unsuccessfully to learn how to be a competitive swimmer. The failure did not deter my desire for being in water. Through the support of the Kiehle Art Gallery, I brought a friend into the installation project and photographed her thru a window set into the school’s swimming pool wall while directing her positioning and movement with a remote receiver.
