LEAVING THE MOVIE THEATER 1997 - 2000
For the project titled Memory Theater, I revisited the Saint Paul Orpheum Theater, a public space from my youth long closed due to economic and financial reasons. I looked to photograph traces of a way of life that is no more in a place where it appeared time had stood still. The building appeared as an island, surrounded by a society progressing faster and faster, forgotten by the strong cultural and economic changes surrounding it. The Orpheum bares a strange similarity to hundreds of others of its kind disused or demolished. I opened the theater, working with the city, to allow patrons to visit 2 weekends before the doors were again sealed shut. The building remains closed.
