The work was inspired by a myth surrounding the German performer Marlene Dietrich. It has been circulated through print and story that the audience applause from her concerts all over the world, including cities named in the title, were recorded for her. And that she had a record made she listened to and could recognize and name locations and times from the loudness and timbre of the applause sound.
The multimedia work responds to these imagined sounds that have been lost to time. By stacking the records and placing the speaker thrusting its audio waves into the heavens, we can imagine a link not only to the locations but also to the souls whose clapping was captured and live no more except through a recording that might have been made and is nowhere to be found.
